Free album of the day.*

* Okay, technically you can pay for this album, but it follows Radiohead's "pay-what-you-want" model

Hey, I'm Grant. I feel like Greg doesn't update the blog enough (jk!) so I thought I'd make my first post.

I don't really know much about Girl Talk. I know his name is Gregg Gillis and he takes the art(?) of the mashup to another level, piling layers upon layers of pop, hip-hop, R&B and indie rock. I know some of my friends really like him, and I've heard his stuff at their parties. For some reason, I've always kinda felt like I was missing something. "Sure," I thought, "he uses a lot of interesting samples, but even I can make a decent beat out of a Hall & Oates song."

I was beginning to worry that Girl Talk was one of those artists(?) that a lot of my friends like but I don't get (*cough* M.I.A. *cough*). Then, last week, he released his new album Feed The Animals as a download for any price you see fit. When it asked me why I opted to pay $0.00, I selected "I don't really like Girl Talk."

I might have to change my answer now. I'm not sure whether it was the juxtaposition of Lil Wayne's autotuner vocals from "Lollipop" with John Frusciante's guitar from the Chili Peppers' classic "Under the Bridge", or hearing Jay-Z do "Roc Boys" over the breakdown of Radiohead's "Paranoid Android," but something changed my mind about Girl Talk. I guess it's because this album reconciles my love for all kinds of music. Girl Talk helped me to realize it's okay to like Mary J. Blige and Ben Folds Five, Nelly Furtado and Elvis Costello, or Tom Petty and Timbaland. Plus, there's appearances from Journey, Kenny Loggins, and Ace of Base! Wikipedia has a list of samples used on the album if you have any trouble identifying songs. My only complaint with this album is that there is no Charles and Eddie. He also didn't use any Hall & Oates samples, probably because I've already mastered that particular style.

Go check it out, it's a good listen. Why will you pay $0.00 for Feed The Animals?

Well I did not listen to it til just now and I have listened to it nearly twice all the way thru and holy sh*t batman it's amazing. This is art! Incredible. One of the top 5 albums released this year no doubt even if it is a mash up cd. PHENOMENAL!

All the different songs mashed up on here are amazing.
